About the farm:
Bartho Eksteen is the owner and wine maker of Bartho Eksteen Wijnskool. Bartho was also the former winemaker at Hermanuspietersfontein. The Wijnskool is situated at the bottom of the Hemel-en-Aarde valley in Hermanus – a cool climate region.
We have visited the farm for a tasting, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience! The tasting was hosted by Bartho himself, and all the wines were delicious. The wines have Afrikaans names, and the story behind the wines often resulted in some giggles.
This was a very unique experience. The tasting room is full of history and stories. I can absolutely recommend visiting Bartho to anyone traveling to the valley!

About the wine:
Meester is a wine from the Wijnskool Estate Range and is predominantly a wooded Sauvignon Blanc blended with a bit of Sémillon.
The wine has a pale-yellow colour with moderate aromas of melon, green pepper and citrus fruits. Meester has a crisp acidity and due to the wood, I perceive it to be a lighter form of a medium bodied, dry wine. The wood also contributes to the wine’s complexity and full-mouthfeel.
Meester is a great wine to enjoy in the summer months. It does not only have to be enjoyed with people who prefer wooded wines, but also people with a preference for unwooded wines, as the wood element in Meester is not overpowering. It is noticeable, but subtle.
