Merlot

Pronounced “Mer-low

Merlot is a great wine to be used as a single varietal, or in a blend. It is an important grape included in Bordeaux-style blends. Merlot plantings are more widely planted in France and Italy than Cabernet Sauvignon. It is also one of France’s most popular red grape varieties, particularly in the Bordeaux region.

Merlot tends to be lower in tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, but higher in sugar and lower in acidity. It is also known as the “smooth”, easy-drinking red wine and is often confused with Cabernet Sauvignon, but is more medium-bodied/ less full-bodied than Cabernet.

Flavours & aromas: Merlot’s colour ranges from a bright garnet red to a dark shade of purple. It has a fresh and fruity taste, full of dark berries, chocolate, eucalyptus, coffee, violets, cinnamon, almond nougat, mint, red berries and plum.

Food & wine: Merlot pairs well with lamb, duck, quail, tongue, cold meats and pasta dishes.

Serving temperature & ageing potential: Some Merlots age with benefit, but the majority is made for easy-drinking and should be enjoyed within 3-8 years. Suggested serving temperature: 15˚C – 18˚C.
