About the farm:

Lourensford Wine Estate is located in Somerset West. The estate was part of Vergelegen (its neighboring estate which was established by Adriaan van der Stel in 1709). Lourensford was subsequently purchased by Dr Christo Wiese in 1998.

The farm currently consists of 4 000 hectares of forest, fynbos, fruit orchards and of course, the vineyards situated up the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains.

The farm has a lot to offer visitors, and would not be my first choice if you wanted to have a tasting room all to yourself. There is definitely something for everyone: Wine tasting, chocolate and wine pairing, a coffee roastery, restaurant and much more.

About the wine:

This 100% Chardonnay is full of flavour and attitude. It has a deep golden yellow colour with strong aromas of melon, pineapple, white peach and apricot. It also has aromas of vanilla, toasted nuts and toffee, which is attributable to the wine being oaked for 10 months.

This is a full-bodied, dry wine with fresh acidity. With its creamy mouthfeel and lingering finish, it will pair well with fatty fish dishes or duck a l’orange. This wine can be aged for up to 7 years and should form part of any Chardonnay lover’s collection.

I love this “heavier” style of Chardonnay – it is full of flavour, but not so overpowering that it limits you to only having one glass at a time. As it is not an entry-level wine (price wise), I would recommend that this only be shared with fellow wine lovers who appreciate this wooded style Chardonnay!
